I'm 41 and following my mid-life crisis by jumping back into screenwriting. Age old story, so what makes mine different?
I've been told I'm a pretty good writer by someone other than my mom. Yep. True story. Read my work and judge it for yourself.
I also happen to hit many of the checkboxes of life experiences, which I've been told is good for writers. Although I hate labels, I'm going to recite a few of them here for brevity. I'm an army brat, computer programmer's kid, abusive alcoholic's daughter, grew up around gangs (Bloods, Crips, and Disciples), teen mom, single mom, former welfare recipient, Democrat, college graduate in Business/Marketing, entrepreneur (of two failed companies) and currently a manager in an animal rescue non-profit on the forefront of innovation.
I also happen to a woman, part Chinese and part Caucasian, so you'll get the whole Amy Tan background to boot. I've worked in several industries from NCAA college athletics to foreclosures to technology and now to animal rescue.
My life is...in some ways crazier than fiction. In other ways, my life is completely ordinary. I have career ADD. I tend to follow things that look like fun. I've also gotten into my share of "crap, how do I get out of this situations". So if I write what I know...
I can become what I'm called to do: to serve as a warning and a model of what not to do. (Or what to do? Or the trendy "failure porn" currently going viral?) Children can look up and say, that is how you make bad life choices. I don't want to do that, but if I do, I can fix it in 20 years. After all, she did it.
I reside in Austin, Texas and spend my free time following my hobby ADD. My competing priorities include writing, film, exploring freelance interests and attending the many free events Austin has to offer.
I feel compelled to provide a voice for the voiceless, to humanize and revel in the complexities of the human experience. My hope is for my stories to help build bridges of understanding with one another. Maybe, to provide hope for the hopeless. At the very least, to tell a story and provide entertainment for the moments of time the readers have entrusted me with.
