Writer / Director / Producer, E.K. Scarfone was raised in California. She completed the certificate program in Screenwriting at UCLA Extension in 2001, but had to forsake the dream in order to earn a living. After many years as a Digital Strategist, she returned to the dream, currently halfway through an MFA program in Filmmaking and Producing. She started pursuing film race projects outside of school. After earning a Top 15 Finalist laurel on the 72-Hour Horror Film Race, her team’s film “Gratuity” won “Best Student Film.” A few months later, she directed the award-winning mockumentary, “Nawthwest Bounty Hunters.’ for the 48-Hour Film Project, Seattle (2017).
She is currently in preproduction on three short films, including a Sci-Fi/Horror “creature” film (short). Upcoming projects include a Sci-Fi/Horror feature film and a Sci-Fi TV series.
Gratuity was originally created for the 72-hour Horror Film Festival in April 2017, where it was a Top 15 Finalist and awarded "Best Student Film." We had 72 hours to write, shoot, edit and submit the film.
Contest rules required three elements to be in the film: a key, the action of answering a phone, and the theme of "vengeance."
Of course, no film will come out perfect in 72 hours, so after the contest we went through post again, this time adding a musical score by students of the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program, and enhanced sound design/audio by student of Seattle Film Institute.
