Little Red Pocketbook
“Little Red Pocketbook” tells the story of the brave students attending the all-black Adkin High School in Kinston, NC, in 1952. Under a segregated educational system, many disparities existed between Adkin and the all-white high school, Grainger. Adkin students were forced to learn from hand-me-down textbooks, share one microscope in science class, and attend school for an entire decade without a gymnasium. Even with all these hardships, the Adkin Pirates loved and respected their school. In order to fight for the learning tools they knew they deserved, the student body staged one of the first walkouts at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement. Their legacy has helped shaped the course of history in Kinston, and now it is finally time for the world to know.

Holly Holder is a Sophomore at Duke University majoring in Abnormal Psychology. Apart from film, Holder is interested in musical theater and is an active member of Duke’s Hoof ‘n’ Horn, a student-led theater organization. She also runs a blog https://justjulianablog.wordpress.com and YouTube channel voiceofjuliana. Originally from Kinston, NC, Holder learned about the story of the brave Adkin High School students who led one of the first walkouts of the Civil Rights Movement. So inspired by their bravery, Holder filmed, directed and produced her first documentary, “Little Red Pocketbook". Holder plans to create a central website of lesson plans and raw footage for students in Kinston and beyond to learn about the Adkin Walkout. She is so thankful for this opportunity and would like to encourage all of you to learn about your home. Most of the time, the most interesting and inspiring people from our past never make the history books.
