Garret Walsh is an Irish writer/director whose debut short, The Observer Effect, released in Aug 2017 found success at many international film festivals. Garret is currently in pre-production on his next short, a proof of concept for his feature debut while also developing a number of other spec feature scripts.
The Observer Effect has picked up numerous nominations for directing and best film on its journey, taking Best Overall Short Film at the Richard Harris International Film Festival and Grand prize the NY Shorts Film Festival, Best World Cinema short at the Culver City Film festival and a Platinum Remi Award at 2018's Worldfest in Houston.
For as long as I can remember I've been fascinated by film's power to transport an audience from their own world into its created one and with this, my first film as a director, I was determined to try do the same.
The story I wrote started with a pretty simple premise but once I started pre-production and saw what my team were capable of and just how much they could bring to it in terms of scale and scope we set about pushing the creative vision for The Observer Effect much further, making it feel less like a typical short film and more like part of a feature film.
I think that ambition was contagious too: every member of the cast and crew who came aboard was taken by the possibilities of what they saw us attempt and every one of them brought so much passion and craft to their roles - it's the most truly collaborative and generous project I've ever been involved in and a massive testament to the immeasurable talent of so many people.
Finally seeing it on the big screen and capturing what I hoped we would has been incredible and as we follow our characters' journey into our imagined world I hope the audience finds itself, however briefly - as transported as I have been by the movies.
