ONE DAY THE WEATHERMAN
ONE DAY THE WEATHERMAN is a coming-of-age dramedy about a boy named Lucas Neary who grows up in a family that puts the "dys" in "dysfunctional": a runaway father, an emotionally fragile mother, and the haunting presence of his dead older brother.
The story begins in 1979 in Marin County, California. Lucas is 10-years old and is playing a game called "Fantasy Island" with his older brother, Ross, who naturally is assuming the role of Mr. Rourke. This is a significant event in Lucas’s life as it is the last time he will play this game with his brother ever again, and it is also the first and only time Lucas will win. This win will soon turn into guilt though when, later, Ross dies in a car accident when he steals the family car for a date.
Also torn with guilt is Lucas’s father, Joe, a weatherman, who leaves for work one day and doesn’t come back. His mother, Cynthia, a piano teacher, lives her life through the lives of her students and Ross's death pushes Cynthia even further into a world of fragility and regret.
In an effort to connect with his mother, Lucas takes piano lessons with her and, soon enough, falls in love with music on his own and its wonderful escape from reality. Lucas continues to study music throughout high school and college where he meets a kaleidoscope of interesting characters, some of whom have a direct connection to his parents' past and thus may hold the key to his father's future.
Some of these interesting characters include Ash, a long-lost cousin of Lucas's on his father's side, who got this nickname because of his consistent lack of discarding the ashes from the numerous cigarettes he smokes. Ash introduces his younger cousin to some wild women and, soon after, Lucas loses his virginity in a hilarious way.
During Lucas's college years, he meets a sassy and sarcastic redhead named Ariel who he forms a long-term relationship with. Eventually, they go on a road trip to Colorado to find Lucas’s missing father and end up learning a lot about themselves and each other along the way.
In the end, all the interlacing stories and characters end up in an L.A. coffee shop for a twist ending that will leave audiences wondering about the nature of coincidence and fate.
