Dead in the Water is only my 2nd Short film as a Director, though I've worked on several other Shorts and low-budget features in the UK. I grew-up on the East coast of England and studied Film and Politics at London Metropolitan University though took a tangent for a decade, managing bookshops in London, getting back into film-making in 2014. My biggest influences are British & American cinema, particularly John Boorman, Ridley Scott & Stanley Kubrick. In terms of Horror, there can be only one: John Carpenter! Like all of the directors I adore, I strive to make films that are entertaining and commercial as long as this goes hand-in-hand with novel storytelling and creative cinematography.
Dead in the Water is actually a very personal film for me having grown-up on the British coast in the Essex locations where it was filmed before I moved to London. It is, if you can excuse the pun, a fish out of water story, with the drama deriving from characters uneasy in the strange small worlds in which they find themselves. The film is also an homage to some of my all time favourite films including Deliverance, Jaws and the Wicker Man. Knowing the legendary problems those films had during their productions was also part of the appeal of setting sail on my own thrilling, adventure horror story on water. And of course my cast & crew ran into our own problems, including our main boat sinking in a storm the day before the shoot. Somehow, we made it through. I was lucky enough to have a talented young team join me for the ride, many of whom have been collaborators on other projects, including Ben Lettieri in the lead role of 'Lewis', multi-talented in front of & behind the camera, also working as our fight choreographer & editor. Plus the brilliant Andrew Shire supporting with an inspired performance as crazed fisherman 'Shore', and my cinematographer Richard Carlton, always calm under pressure. Our wonderfully creepy shark masks and shark fins were made by my crafty art team of Hannah Lawson & Callum Haden respectively. I hope everyone who sees it enjoys it as much as we enjoyed making it.
