Anna Garcia Does a One Woman Play

The highly intense, overbearing and imaginative Anna Garcia arranges to do a one woman play, and to have a documentary made about herself doing the play. There’s just one problem: she doesn’t have a script or any idea what her play will be about. Watch as Anna desperately scrambles around Ann Arbor, trying to get other people to write her play as she pieces together her "chef d'ouevre."

Director Biography - Anna Garcia

Anna Garcia graduated this spring from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Screen Arts and Cultures, where she learned to write, direct, act and edit for TV, movies, and sketch comedy. Some of her favorite projects include directing a documentary about a wanderlust ice cream truck driver, a live sketch show titled "Live Bait" and of course, this project: "Anna Garcia Does a One Woman Play."

Some of her favorite things she did outside of her major that took up sweet chunks of time: performing in the plays "boom" and "The Nether" in the School of Music Theatre and Dance, serving as an acting apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, improvising with her long-form improv troupe, Midnight Book Club, and directing "Gutenberg! The Musical!" She also did a couple of internships in New York some summers back, if that impresses you.

Hello there!

I'm Anna Garcia, a lady filmmaker, actor, and recent graduate from the University of Michigan. "Anna Garcia Does a One Woman Play" is my final project before I dive into the real world and fling myself into reality. This film stemmed from an idea I had a couple years ago when I considered proposing an official senior thesis. I wanted to pour myself into a project that breaks form and experiments with comedy and timing. I never actually submitted anything to be a thesis through my major, and as this shifted to a more independent project, this film subsequently became what I like to call a "rogue thesis."

A lot of inspiration came from my time as an Acting Apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where I wrote an autobiographical piece called "Wearing the Hat." It explored the idea of performativity and the ways we portray ourselves differently to certain people. I carried that theme over when writing this, incorporating the ego, narcissism, and authenticity of a human being while exploring how mental health may factor into those ideas. I find that comedy is the best way of bringing these themes forward. By looking and amplifying flaws in myself, I hope to spread a larger message about what connects us as humans, and the difference we have between being presentational and being ourselves.

This film, though plastered with my name, was a team effort, and I am so excited to share it with you. I hope you enjoy "Anna Garcia Does a One Woman Play."

Warmly,
Anna Garcia
