Sharon Wilharm never intended to be a filmmaker. Growing up, she was much more interested in books than movies. Then she married a businessman with a degree in broadcast communications, and before she knew what was happening, she was writing, directing, and starring in a feature film. Since that time Sharon has written and directed six more feature films (she decided she was much more at home behind the camera than in front of it) with her filmmaking husband handling the camera work and editing.
The Wilharms distinguished themselves by producing two silent features, one of which was included in the AMC Independent lineup and screened at select AMC theaters including AMC Empire at Times Square.
Sharon has two film related blogs and is a popular speaker at film events.
Growing up I knew Daddy was on the USS Forrestal when I was a baby, and that something terrible happened. But I never gave it much thought until I was grown and married with a daughter of my own. Then it finally hit me. What was it like for my mother, hearing the news but not knowing whether Daddy was alive, injured, or killed? What was it like when the men returned and rather than receiving a heroes welcome like with previous wars, they were spit on and treated with disdain? These are questions I began asking myself.
While researching for the script, I interviewed as many men and women as I could find, approaching the Vietnam War from all different angles. I talked to men who enlisted, men who were drafted, men who avoided it by going to college or having a physical condition. And even more so, I talked to women who shared about their experiences as wives, sweethearts, sisters, and friends. Each story was unique, but they all shared similar themes of being scared, confused, and disillusioned. I tried to capture a little bit of each of those emotions and present it in a way that shows the complexity of the Vietnam War. As Howard says in the movie, "War, it's not so black and white".
My desire is that Summer of '67 will bring hope and healing to Vietnam Veterans as well as encouragement for anyone dealing with difficult times.
