Director Statement

When you go through life ridden with anxiety, regret, and guilt; you see the world through a low resolution perception. Everything is blurry, blown out, pixelated. It's hard to see truth and reality as it is. Instead you see a distorted lower definition and grating view of your world.

It's only in fleeting moments of peace when a friend calls or in a dinner with a loved one that you ascend from this low resolution expereience into a high definition breath. Were you realize just how low-res your world had been.

I shot Huyendo for $12,000 on MiniDV, with a 90s home video camcorder, to give the audience the full experience of the main character's volatile internal and external world. The MiniDv tape slides you into anxiety with the friction of 480p.

Having suffered from weekly anxiety attacks in my teen years, I’ve also experienced the teenage drug scene first hand. With this film I strived to portray that stressful run-from-your-truama lifestyle truthfully.

“Huyendo” is shot and constructed in a way where past traumas from Angel’s life keep colliding and appearing in his present. Visually, he physically and mentally can’t escape his past. This collapsing world of anxiety keeps him from growing and causes his destructive behavior.

I hope to inspire resentful people trapped in the past to learn from Angel’s story, when in the end, he escapes the past by facing his past traumas and emotions truthfully.

Push through the low resolution perception you've been clinging onto, so that you can emerge into the high definition world of growth.
