Director Biography

Zineb Wakrim, born in Casablanca in 2001, is a Moroccan film director and screenwriter. From an early age, she has been fascinated by the history of art, particularly the surrealist movement, dreaming of becoming a Salvador Dali or René Magritte. Painting enables her to visualize filmed shots in advance, giving them life and meaning. In 2019, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in applied arts, then joined the School of Visual Arts in Marrakech to obtain a diploma in directing in 2023.
Today, Zineb Wakrim is part of the young generation of millennials, who promise a new Moroccan cinema.
For the artist cinema becomes a refuge from today’s often unforgiving world. Cinema enables her to create a world imbued with poetry and spirituality, and to share her values with those who believe in spirituality and ideals, by being there for each other and working together for humanity.
She draws her inspiration from certain details: misery, need, lack and, finally, the ineffable courage that puts everything back in order and restores hope to all those who seek it somewhere.
During her training at film school, Zineb also worked on her personal memoirs, which led her to discover a number of inspirational references for her cinema, such as Andrei Tarkovsky’s kinoobraz concept and Antonioni’s dramaturgical rupture, which are clearly perceptible in her writing, her creative approach to the screenplay and her visual plasticity.
Zineb Wakrim has directed several films, including AYYUR, which was selected in the official CINEF competition at the Cannes Film Festival and won the third prize. AYYUR was honored by jury president Ildikó Enyedi “for its originality and incisiveness” and toured several festivals after its premiere at Cannes. It was screened at the Pantheon cinema in Paris in June, at the MUCEM in Marseille at COPEAM, at the SARAJEVO FILM FESTIVAL in Bosnia-Herzegovina, received a special mention JEUNE PUBLIQUE in Montpellier and shone at MEDFILM ROME in Italy, occupying the major Italian platforms (MyMovies. it).
AYYUR enabled Zineb Wakrim to be selected as one of the 30 UNDER 30 at FORBES MIDDLE EAST 2023 in the USA.
