Director Statement

Fierce on the outside, flailing on the inside - Girl's story speaks to a widespread female experience that has hardly ever been represented on screen. 21 days is an excruciatingly long period to wait for a reliable pregnancy test, especially considering the stakes are a possible unwanted child or a termination.

The idea was conceived (ha ha) after realising that men just don’t experience post-sex scares like women do. The story lies on the periphery of the narrative space that has exploded since the social reckoning of #MeToo, but this is not a tale of abuse. The sex, though unprotected, is consensual. Yet the experience, from the onus on women to be on contraception, to the financial burden of the morning-after pill, to the possibility of carrying another life, is undoubtedly gendered.

These grey areas of sex that is awkward but not traumatic, distressing but not criminal, in some ways cataclysmic but in others mundane, are deserving of screen-time and exploration.

Crucially, Boy is not a villain - but he's totally ignorant of the rigmarole Girl goes through. This ignorance is reflected in most men (who aren't exposed to this side of casual relations), which is why this film feels somewhat urgent.

We’ve made it with a female crew both because of the subject matter and to counterbalance the usually male-dominated crews in the industry.
