Experiencing Interruptions?

 Ρέβ (Dream)

Ρέβ (Rêve/Dream) is a day within a life, re-lived through fragmented memories. Loneliness, abandonment and regret are prevailing themes within cycles of reflection, jest and contradiction.

A short documentary examining the consequence of time within the fragility of memory, exposing a sense of self, trapped within materiality and fantasy.

Director Statement

I decided to make this documentary because growing up, my grandmother was an intriguing but also somewhat problematic character in my family. My memories of her were conflicted and not always pleasant. I always remember her taking lots of medications and there were many incidences that as a child I found strange but could not make much sense of them. Through the years she isolated herself and to me resembled a very troubled figure, trapped in her own world.

I wanted to create a parallel with how it is to age in our society. How seniors are somewhat abandoned; left to their own devices with memories as their closest companion. The idea of the physical home, as an extension of the self and integrated with identity, resonated with me, especially for this specific generation. With this thinking, I set out to observe how she sees herself and her reality. How she remembers and reflects on her life and which parts she decides to share with us.

Under close observation, many contradictions and exaggerations become apparent. The line between what is real and what is fiction is blurred and the notion of ”truth” is under question. During the process I realised that it was not important or relevant for me to depict her in any specific way but to let her tell her story as she wanted, because this was her truth.
