Experiencing Interruptions?

Green Shoes

In 1960’s suburbia, a 14-year-old girl befriends a 47-year-old man to cope with the knowledge of her father’s affairs. The man, a WW2 veteran, has developed an obsession with innocence after experiencing the horrors of the war. After being coerced into making the relationship sexual, the girl mistakes her feelings for love, and becomes obsessed with the man-- who is no longer interested.

From the writer, Jessica Ryan:

More often than not, stories about sexual abuse are told by men speaking on behalf of women. Even as a 14 year old girl, I knew I needed to take this narrative into my own hands, so I started to write my own feature-length screenplay.

Six years later, little has changed in the industry. Especially in the wake of the "me too" movement and the takedown of so many men in Hollywood, I think it's important to explore the results of sexual abuse from both the victim and abuser's point of view. This way we can better understand why these things happen.

Green Shoes is told through a "he said, she said" narrative, blurring the truth and leaving the audience to decide for themselves. It also deals with a widely ignored part of sexual abuse: Stockholm syndrome and just how often the victims believe they're in love with their abuser. Green Shoes gives a voice to those who have been voiceless for so long.
