Fishbowl
Jameson and Claire have been together for three years when she breaks the news to Jameson that she’s been cheating on him and wants to break up. Jameson finds himself in a haze of heartbreak and hopelessness, and tries to attain solace in his best friend Emily. She, however, just found out that she inherited a life-threatening heart condition from her mother who died from the same disease. The film follows Emily and Jameson as they try to cope with these changes, letting their lives unravel and then trying to pick the pieces back up again. A beautiful story of life, love, friendship and death, skillfully woven together by the crisp writing of Benjamin Klema and Miranda Stewart’s artful direction, Fishbowl provides an unexpected layer of comedy to otherwise difficult situations for all movie lovers to enjoy.

Miranda grew up in Arizona where she acted all through her primary and secondary school years. Initially, she chose Caltech to study biology, but found herself spending more time in the theatre than in the lab. She transferred to the school where she met Colwell and graduated with a degree in theatre. Since then, she has directed numerous plays, musicals, and short films. An actor’s director, Stewart barreled in to the complicated character relationships in her first feature film.
How do we react when life doesn't go as planned? In FISHBOWL, we meet best friends Jameson and Emily right at their tipping points. They've each settled into comfortable lives when BOOM!—something happens (actually two things) that thrust them out of their comfort zones. It’s the things you don’t plan for, the things that come at you out of left field, that send you down a new path. Both are struggling to find their new places in the world, and figuring out how these changes will affect their relationship with each other. It's funny, and it's tragic, but most of all it's very true. When Aylia Colwell asked me to direct FISHBOWL, I had never directed film before. My experience lay in plays and musicals. I was wary at first about how my skills would translate, but as she described the story and the characters to me, I knew I could do it. I dove into Benjamin Klema’s script and focused on the complex character relationships to find the honest connections between Emily, Jameson, and the supporting characters. As we rehearsed and then shot the movie, I worked with the actors to deepen each scene by finding the sadness in the joy and the joy in the sadness. Because that's life!
