es-bar-ro
Esbarro was initially created under a cooperation between the Dance Undergraduation department and the Film Production Graduate department, both at the Concordia University.
However, it became much more than just an exercise. The idea was to, in collaboration with the dance students, develop a film. So we did. This dance-film is about harmony, human figures and unity. Playing with the concept of multiple screens, absence & presence, we created Esbarro.
The project ended up involving more people than we initially figured, and this was a good thing. It ended up being a reflection, an extension, of the film itself. We cooperated, created and evolved. We synchronized and unsynchronized. We exchanged, a lot.
Esbarro is a word in Portuguese that means to bump, to clash onto someone or something.

Anna Iunes is a Brazilian filmmaker currently living in Canada. In 2017, she completed a Bachelor's degree in Social Communication with a specialization in Cinema at the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) in Rio de Janeiro. She has also studied art history and visual arts at The School of Visual Arts of Parque Lage, also in Rio. In 2015, Iunes directed MaracaTU, a short film that was selected for the Cilect DVD Selection the same year. In 2019, she studied digital filmmaking in Lucca, Italy through the Alto Studio - Summer Lens Art Study program. That same year, she was granted with the Peter Lenkov Scriptwriting Award. Most recently, Iunes completed a dance-video installation called "es bar ro". In 2022, Iunes received a Master in Fine Arts - Film Production at the Concordia University. As the conclusion of the program, she directed the film-installation "Tulipán".
I have mainly worked as a Production Designer and as a Director. In the past two years, I've become more interested in the universe of video art and Installation. In my work, I am not just trying to create moving image, but encompassing and immersive experiences. I like to fragment narratives and images with the use of multiple screens. The dramatic and interpretative aspect of a fiction film is essential for me: working with actors, professionals or not, is a big part of my creative process.
