Director Biography - Rachel Evans

Rachel makes short films using really old, heavy, infuriating film equipment, then draws on the stock by hand, for months, sometimes years, scans it and edits it digitally. She does this mostly in Victoria, BC and Calgary AB, but loves to drive all over the country collecting interesting footage.

The rest of her time is most happily spent in the company of dogs, exploring the wilderness and making art.

Director Statement

Intended as a 4 minute found- footage short, this film grew in length and technical challenges, in response to the events and images I encountered as I made it. It's my first scratch film that uses my own original footage combined with found imagery. It's about how grief is an ocean and it's dedicated to my lost love, Joel.

Thanks so much to all of the people who volunteered their time to provide me with help and feedback on this project. Especially: Sam Bowman, Lauren Angers, Devin Friesen, Michael Jess, Marlene Jess, Nick Haywood, Peter Hemminger, Tyler Longmire, Ryan Von Hagen, Rachael Chaission, Jaimie Gould, Chuck Gould, Satnaum Mead and Amy McCulloch. Thank you also to the National Film Board of Canada, Alberta Foundation For the Arts and Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers for their funding and Quickdraw Animation Society for its never ending support.
