Sou antropóloga e minha arte é a da escuta. Escuto para aprender, escuto para sentir, e escuto para contar histórias. Há muitos anos, escuto histórias de aborto. Já ouvi histórias de mulheres que buscaram métodos inseguros e sentiram medo; de mulheres que sentiram alívio; de mulheres que entristeceram; e, tristemente, de mulheres que foram presas ou morreram. Aprendi que o aborto é um evento comum às mulheres comuns brasileiras.

“uma mulher comum” é um documentário sobre uma dessas histórias—o aborto de Scarleth na Argentina. Uma mulher por minuto aborta no Brasil, e a maioria delas em condições inseguras. Como Scarleth, a mulher que aborta é negra, jovem e tem filhos. É do meio da multidão de mulheres anônimas que abortam no Brasil que Scarleth arriscou-se a viver um aborto incomum.

Scarleth atravessou a fronteira para não adoecer, não morrer e não ser presa. Sem nunca ter visitado país estrangeiro, Scarleth chegou a Buenos Aires com a mãe, Margarete. Mãe e filha foram acompanhadas por Rebeca, outra brasileira a ter atravessado fronteiras para um aborto legal, e de um jornalista do mais importante canal de televisão no Brasil. Scarleth quis fazer uma história pública de sua própria intimidade, e um evento com diferentes camadas narrativas: a sua própria biografia, a da televisão e a minha como documentarista.

A viagem de mulheres entre fronteiras é um fenômeno recente na história do aborto no Brasil. O aborto foi legalizado na Argentina em 2020, e pouco se conhece sobre esse trânsito entre os países. Em um momento de intensas transformações políticas no Brasil e na Argentina, o filme localiza a história de Scarleth em um capítulo de mais longa duração das lutas democráticas por direitos das mulheres: são os lenços brancos das mães e avós da Praça Maio, nos anos 1970; e os lenços verdes das meninas, mulheres e todas as pessoas da Maré Verde, nos anos 2020.

As imagens de arquivo das marchas das mães da Praça de Maio e a cumplicidade amorosa entre Scarleth e Margarete num quarto de hotel em Buenos Aires me provocaram a pergunta sobre “o que as mães são capazes de fazer para proteger os seus filhos?”. Se bem escutei e senti a história de Scarleth e de tantas outras mulheres, “uma mulher comum” é um documentário sobre uma história de aborto, mas também sobre a coragem de gerações de mulheres anônimas que desafiaram regimes políticos autoritários.

Minha motivação com este documentário foi a de oferecer uma biografia a esse familiar desconhecido que é o aborto no Brasil. É um filme sobre um evento comum da mulher comum brasileira que foge da punição e do estigma do aborto em seu próprio país, entremeado ao passado de luta democrática das mulheres argentinas por direitos, verdade e cidadania.

I'm an anthropologist and my art is listening. I listen to learn, I listen to feel, and I listen to tell stories. I've been listening to abortion stories for many years. I've heard stories of women who had unsafe methods and felt fear; of women who felt relief; of women who felt sadness; and, sadly, of women who were imprisoned or died. I learned that abortion is a common event for common Brazilian women.

"a common woman" is a documentary about one of these stories - Scarleth's abortion in Argentina. One woman a minute has an abortion in Brazil, and most of them are in unsafe conditions. Like Scarleth, the woman who has the abortion is Black, young and is a mother. It is from among the anonymous women who have abortions in Brazil that Scarleth risked experiencing an unusual abortion.

Scarleth crossed the border to avoid getting sick, dying or being arrested. In her first international trip, Scarleth arrived in Buenos Aires with her mother, Margarete. Mother and daughter were accompanied by Rebeca, another Brazilian who had crossed borders for a legal abortion, and a journalist from the most important television channel in Brazil. Scarleth wanted to make a public story of her intimacy, and the event has different narrative layers: her own biographical one, that of the television, and mine as a documentary filmmaker.

Women traveling across borders is a recent phenomenon in the history of abortion in Brazil. Abortion was legalized in Argentina in 2020, and little is known about this transit between countries. At a time of intense political transformations in Brazil and Argentina, the film locates Scarleth's story in a longer-lasting chapter of the democratic struggles for women's rights: the white scarves of the mothers and grandmothers of Plaza Mayo in the 1970s; and the green scarves of the girls, women and all the people of Maré Verde in the 2020s.

The archive footage of the Plaza de Mayo mothers' marches and the loving bond between Scarleth and Margarete in a Buenos Aires hotel room provoked the question "what are mothers capable of doing to protect their children?". "a common woman" is a documentary about a story of abortion, but also about the courage of generations of anonymous women who have defied authoritarian political regimes.

My motivation with this documentary was to offer a biography of this unknown familiarity that is abortion in Brazil. It's a film about a common event of a common Brazilian woman fleeing the punishment and stigma of abortion in her own country, interwoven with the past democratic struggle of Argentine women for rights, truth and citizenship.
