Director Statement

In the midst of the COVID-19 lockdown, I found myself wondering what was most badly needed during this unprecedented time of fear and isolation. A vaccine? A treatment? A cure? I quickly realized that the answer was “musical parody,” and if you’ve been following the news, you know that everything has been fine ever since.

“Trapped Inside the House” (The Les Misérables Corona parody that’s going vir- um... bacterial!) is my contribution to this strange and difficult age, and an unofficial sequel to my previous Les Mis food allergy parody, “One Grain More.” It was a labor of love, made enormously better by my assistant directors (Mary Lyon and Adam Levinthal) who controlled the camera remotely from Atlanta and my parents’ deck respectively.

To make this project while employing complete social distancing measures, the three of us had to pioneer a new way of filming via complex combinations of hardware, software, and a whole lot of trial and error. The process turned out to be an exciting challenge, and in some ways to added to the project, because as Adam and Mary controlled the camera from afar they were influenced only by what they could see on the screen. Because of this, they directed me exclusively using input that was much closer to what the finished project would end up looking like, and which I could not see myself from in front of the camera.

I hope that this video will provide a much-needed laugh to anyone who comes across this. The virus itself is not at all funny – but the ways that we have had to alter our lives can be, when viewed through the right lens. I hope that my 18-55 mm one will do nicely.
