Director Statement

Motherland is a national personification of Indonesia, an embodiment of the Indonesian homeland. Since prehistoric times, various ethnic groups in the archipelago have respected the spirit of nature and the power of the earth, they liken it as a mother who gives life, as a goddess of nature, the environment and peace. I also adopted some elements and characteristics of Indonesian Traditional into choreography with simple and natural direction aimed to relate more to Indonesian traditional's aesthetic.

The Protagonist which represents Indonesian, struggles to win and captivate the heart of the Woman, which represents The Motherland. The Protagonist objective is to get an answer for his questions about his identity. I am presenting through the ending, in which the The Protagonist get his answer about him being the cause and finally become one with The Motherland.

Born with Chinese decent in Indonesia, i was exposed to a lot of cultural differences and social issues in Indonesia as a result of not being seen as a “real” Chinese or Indonesian. That's why my family attempts to reinforce our “roots” through cultural practices in my daily life. This sample of work reflects my desire to explore traditional Indonesian culture while also searching for my own identity as a Chinese-Indonesian.
