Director and Cinematographer Brea Mullen (21) grew up in Southern Indiana and is currently studying Multimedia Communications at the University of Evansville. During her time abroad in England, Brea directed the short coming-of-age film “The List” as a chance to challenge herself and collaborate with new faces. She will graduate in December 2020 to pursue a career as a cinematographer. Her main goal is to lens a film for a major production company.
I directed this film, The List, during my time studying abroad in England. Attending post-secondary education is the weirdest, most transitional time in a young girl’s life especially one grappling with her own mental health. The protagonist, Sophie, experiences what it’s like to leave the shelter of her home and find her footing on her own in a new environment - much like I was during my semester abroad.
I was inspired by my own battles with mental health and was fascinated by the idea of unpacking the journey while taking it. I’m sure I will look back on this time of my life in 20 years and see it very differently, but I wanted to take a shot at documenting it from my 20-something point of view.
This film is so special to me because of the people who worked on it with me. This cast and crew will always hold a special place in my heart because they showed so much passion and dedication for a project they barely knew yet, and trusted me as a leader and collaborator. When several people came into our first production meeting with PowerPoint presentations to explain their creative ideas, I knew it was going to be a great production.
