Director Biography - Destiny Jackson

Destiny Jackson is a queer, Black filmmaker, photographer, and videographer born in Washington, D.C. and currently based in Bowie, Maryland. Her main goal is to create, highlight, and produce stories that portray accurate and impactful representations of the Black, LGBTQIA+, and Gen-Z people. She is a recent graduate of Bowie State University with a B.S. in Visual Communication, and a concentration in Digital Cinema & Time-Based Media.

She first got her start in the arts during her younger years, always being the person that was constantly behind the camera, recording and documenting everything that her family and friends were up to. She was gifted a Canon T6 for Christmas during her freshman year of college and began to document her life using it to create short videos about her interest in pop culture, music, and lifestyle. Since then, she has gained a following under the moniker, 727 Artistry, where she showcases her different mediums of creativity.

She has helped on multiple film productions, working as a BTS photographer and Production Assistant. Alongside that, she has completed multiple internships in the sports media industry, occupying roles such as Creative Producer at NFL Films and Videographer at the Washington Commanders. She has also collaborated with Adobe Gen Create for a campaign highlighting student creators documenting their everyday life.

Director Statement

For as long as I can remember, I have always been aware of my identity in this world. In middle school, I went through a great transformation with my sexual orientation, and it changed my life for the better. As a queer Black woman living in America, I feel as though it should be my duty to tell the stories of the minorities that I represent. As an aspiring filmmaker, portraying stories that are true to my communities is also a priority when it comes to my storytelling. Queer love is something that is often not portrayed in a positive light in today’s media, which is why I would like to build my senior thesis exhibition based on that topic.

My short film, The Feels, creates the mood of a feel-good romantic comedy that has the audience fall in love with the characters. I want to show a natural chemistry not only between the two characters, but the actors as well. Many of the films that I have studied have shown what many queer Black people go through in their lifetimes, even if it is just a short window of time. I want to provide depth to my characters, so I will have to make sure I display that in a way that is not overbearing to the viewer.
