Experiencing Interruptions?

TOMORROW

"There are things you may never use, but it's too late to look for it when you need it."

- As the coronavirus sweeps the globe, an Asian man records his self-isolation process and silent reflections, while situated in two different parts of the world: Unlike those who are used to living in the light, enjoying their freedom of speech, those who are used to living in the shadows also wear masks and can't make a sound, but their inner voices and hopes speak even louder.

Director Biography - Wisher Zhu

Wisher Zhu, born as a speck of dust in ShiJiaZhuang in the context of socialism in 1986, grew up in the era of reform and open policy in China.
He, like many others of his age, felt the rich feathers of imagination being clipped in the rushing flood of childhood conformity. Still, he knew that the free blue sky can never fade.
As a teenager, he began studying Western painting in China until he graduated from university with a major in art and design.
In junior and high school, he began to form underground rock bands and acted as guitarist and songwriter. His band “CH4" participated in Shijiazhuang’s 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Underground Rock Festival. With his band “Super Secret,” he won the award for "Best Original Song” at the "2010 Gibson China Hebei Original Band Competition.”
After graduating from college, he worked as a director for program packaging and broadcast control at Hebei TV station.
After 3 working there for three years, he moved to Germany to study for a master's degree in strategic design and art director and graduated successfully.
A working group on independent film and brand ingress with the opera artist Ms. VMK was established in Berlin, Germany, in 2018.
Working with producer Vera Maria Kremers in 2020, he worked as director, actor, as well as videographer and editor for his first independent short film - 《 MORGEN 》

Director Statement

Dear Mr / Mrs,

I'm director Wisher Zhu and I am writing to you to present my 20-minute short film “Morgen” to please considerate for presentation at your film festival.
Since the beginning of the year, I have experienced three self-isolation periods in different places in China and Germany. During these three processes of quarantine, I was surrounded by different social and cultural environments. Going through these surreal times inspired me to base my first short film on my true isolation experience during the global spread of the coronavirus COVID19.

There is no actual dialogue. Something wanted to be expressed, but it cannot be described in words. Even if it's spoken, it's swallowed up by some kind of invisible hurricane. And all I want to express is only described in the language of the lens.
When I was a child studying western painting in my hometown ShiJiaZhuang, my teacher was very patient in teaching us to depict and analyse the dark parts of light and shadow. He would say: "The light is wonderful, but you should learn to observe and put emotions into the other, less visible parts. Because the most subtle, tempered language and contrast lies hidden in the darker side of the object that you have set your eyes on." Thinking back to that time, his sentences didn't only pertain to painting. Rather, they influenced me in many other aspects of my work, way of thinking, how I experience feelings, contrasts, and - particularly in this case- my reflections on freedom of speech.
I'm just one of those millions of self-isolators, and one of those who lost their smiles when awareness dawned. Now, I use my own camera and performance to depict the dark side of this painting.

I hope that the people, who will pay attention to my work can feel what I want to express. That even though there is no speech, the sound of it can be heard louder than the waterfall.
That's my motivation and the direction I want to take.
Thank you for giving this work such an opportunity, and my colleagues and I sincerely thank you.
