Director Biography - Eve Annenberg

Eve Annenberg graduated The Juilliard School in the Drama Division in Group XIV with several of the actors here in "The Work", including Wendell Pierce, Brad Whitford, Tom Gibson, Michel Gill, and matriculated at Columbia Film School a few years later where her cohort included Kim Pierce , Andy Bienen, Tony Gerber, Pat Stettner and she worked alongside Bob Pulcini. Wolfgang Held, award winning DP who shot Principal Photography on The Work co-shot her first feature with Joe Foley. That film was DOGS: The Rise and Fall of an All-Girl Bookie Joint which was the only American film to appear in competition in the Rotterdam International Film Festival when it premiered there. She went on to produce many films including @ ten features, two of whom landed in Sundance, one in the Competition, while DOGS went to. Sundance Channel. Her produced films have also gone to Busan, New Directors, New Films, etc. The Sundance Competition film was a first feature by writer Tony Jaswinsky (The Shallows.) Her next directing venture, Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish, (reviewed here by Amy Taubin in Art Fortum, {https://www.artforum.com/film/amy-taubin-on-romeo-and-juliet-in-yiddish-28587}, won an Audience Award at its premiere in the Berlin Jewish Film Festival, and premiered domestically at Lincoln Center at the Elinor Bunin Monroe movie theater. Romeo and Juliet in Yiddish was named one of the ten best filmed adaptations of the play of all time by Rotten Tomatoes, ten years after it was released. It is still being analyzed in academic journals etc. with regard to the Yiddish New Wave. (LOL).
Eve's first documentary, YO SOY MANUEL, (10 minutes) has won, to date, five awards internationally. This film is her second documentary, Please note: sound mix/VFX being finalized.

Director Statement

I call this film a "documemory" because, recollections are so personal. This is a highly personal film for me as I started it while coordinating care for the inimitable Eve Shapiro. I did that beginning in 2019 for obvious reasons. Eve was my teacher, director, mentor and dear friend. I adored her and all the time I knew her I had no idea that her ties to Margot and Liz were so binding. I found that out only because, when I started doing things for her, they both started calling me. The two scariest women in the world, calling my cell. The moment I had cameras in place, it seemed, Eve became aphasic. Which was especially tragic as she had wanted so much to go on record about her beloved, late partner, 'Lois.' This is my last project 'with' her, and I am trying to do her and her circle justice. Please note: Sound Mix is scheduled but this version is unfiltered and unmixed. Modest animation still in process.
