Strange Constellation is the third and final installment in a cycle of short films about the destructive effects of unresolved grief. Unlike its predecessors, Ens Rationis (2019) and The Walls Alike and Madding (2021), this story is planted firmly in the real world, where the horror is neither supernatural nor mysterious, but mundane and all too common.

While previous chapters explored their themes from internal points of view, Strange Constellation circles it from the outside. It’s the story of an innocent bystander whose orbit is invaded by a grieving stranger’s destructive descent into darkness.

What I love about Audrey (and Myeisha’s powerful portrayal) is that she refuses to become another victim in the chain reaction of trauma. She may not escape the night unscathed, but whatever happens, we sense that she’s too strong to be destroyed by this potentially explosive impact on her world.

The film was shot on location in rural Nebraska, in the blistering heat of late summer. Two weeks of late-night shooting acquainted the cast and crew with twisted ankles, poison ivy, and thousands of curious insects who made their jobs more than a little difficult. I’m incredibly proud of our team, who soldiered through the elements to tell this story, which reflects the heartbreaking real life experiences of so many.
