Born in Montreal, Brent Forrest is a film director living in Tokyo. He started his career as a gopher at Red Rover studios in Toronto in 1999. There he learned the craft of animation from some of Canada's finest draftsmen. In 2019, together with Tobias Schlage he created the short film Like and Follow which won over 30 international film awards. After a 24-year career in animation he's pivoted into programming full time, and on the side enjoys making films and building tools for animation and VFX artists.
This is my debut directing a film for MARZA. I was trying to improve my character design skills by taking part in the Character Design Quarterly challenge on Facebook. One of my drawings that was more popular than the others was of a big fat frog samurai. I don’t know how I made the leap but I started asking around what people thought was more interesting: A samurai who used a golf club or a golfer who used a sword - and the answer was unilaterally the first. So the story grew from there. It also didn’t hurt that I grew up next to a golf course and my dad has been drilling golf stories and golf jokes into my brain for the last 40 years.
