Reflections
LOGLINE.
Scared of becoming a reflection of her schizophrenic father, a young woman must accept and deal with her mental illness or risk losing everything and becoming her most feared demon, her father.
Synopsis
KENENA, a young schizophrenic, takes to writing as a form of therapy for her mental illness. She reflects on her very first mental episodes as she writes. In this episode she wakes up to voices coming from her bathroom, she opens her bathroom door to find her father, KAMSI (30) in his younger self and her younger self, Kenena (15) in her bathroom.
Kenena is torn between what’s real and what’s not, SAM her Fiancé knocks on the bathroom door just in time to snap her back to reality. Her episodes continue, this time becoming more real and threatening. In a full-blown mental attack Kenena finds herself on top of SAM with a bloody bedside lamp, she had it him on the head with it. Seeing she couldn’t run away or hide from it anymore, Kenena decides to seek help from DR. Ann, a psychiatrist, who diagnoses mental illness as schizophrenia. She tells her It has no cure and assures her even though there was no cure, she could gain control of it and manage it.
Kenena finishes reflecting on her writing as she joins SAM in bed. The door bell goes off, Kenena goes to get it. Standing in the door way is a weak and battered Kamsi. Her episode hasn’t stopped, but now it is no longer threatening, she is in control. SAM reassures her of his support as he stands beside her holding her hand. Kenena closes the door to their nightmares.

I have always been fascinated by the human mind. Everyday, millions of people live with variations of mental illnesses which they might be oblivious of; thankfully, mental health is becoming as important as physical health and maybe even more so.
My most personal experience with mental illness was a nervous breakdown I had in 2016 while preparing for my exams. I had not been sleeping or eating well and soon enough I started to hallucinate that some of my friends were trying to kill me. Fortunately, after some rest and a conversation with a friend who was studying psychology at the time, i realised i was stressed.
This film is a look into how mental illness can affect our lives on such a visceral level that it almost ruins the relationships we cherish. As much as Reflections is a psychological drama, it is also a love story. Our character coming to terms with her schizophrenia allows her move forward with her personal life.
I wish to shoot this film in Lagos with an emphasis on interiors to reflect the mental state of the lead character. I also wish to employ a clinical and precise use of cinematography with deliberate camera movements and cuts.
Sound design and Music would be a very pivotal part of this film and the use of various sound design techniques will enhance the experience of the film remarkably.
