Director Biography - Amanda Spencer

Amanda is what the Hollywood trades call a “hyphenate”—a writer, director, producer, and performer. Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, she directed her first play at age 9, mounting a contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST in her parents’ garage. Several of her original plays have been professionally produced to critical acclaim, including CHRYSALIS, her personal favorite. As a soloist, Amanda performed on the internationally broadcast TV show THE HOUR OF POWER for five years; she continued with the organization as the contemporary choral conductor for The Gathering, working alongside Bobby Schuller. In addition, Amanda has produced concerts both nationally and internationally.

Amanda recently formed her own production company, of which she is president. Her first short film, HOW TO LIVE FOREVER, was a gift for her mentor, Cameron Crowe, and featured appearances by many of his friends including: Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams, Judd Apatow, Scarlett Johansson, Orlando Bloom, Paul McCartney, Harry Styles, and many others. Amanda is in post-production on her second short film.

Director's Statement - PRETTY PRETTY PRISON

I was inspired by Lars Von Trier's THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS and so I set out to make a short film original musical setting these parameters for myself:
1. Film shot entirely in or around one house
2. Only cast my friends I already knew
3. 60 days from idea to wrap principal photography
4. Story centered around women
5. Only use wardrobe/props/set design elements that I already own.

PRETTY PRETTY PRISON is, at it's heart, a film for everyone who has been or has a mother. It explores how it feels to lose your identity in another person, in this case she loses her identity in her children and by contorting herself to fit societal standards and expectations. The musical numbers drive the narrative which revolves around one woman reaching her breaking point and her commitment to turn her life around.
