Like having your house broken into, being the victim of phone hacking is a violation of your personal space. Private information is valuable, yet our data can be stolen or sold off in numerous ways every day. From big companies monitoring our daily activity and selling it to advertisers, to hackers stealing personal information and impersonating our friends and loved ones, Phone Hacking exposes the shocking truth behind how vulnerable the average person’s digital life is. In this vital, informative documentary, experts are interviewed about the never-ending fight to protect our data and avoid being the targets of hackers and scammers.
Among the subjects interviewed for this documentary are information security analyst José Alarcón, long-term Microsoft engineer Luiz Fernando Santos, and mobile security expert April Mitchell. These enlightening, eye-opening interviews explore such topics as the ways in which social media platforms make money through exploiting and selling user information, how hackers can use public and private information to commit fraud and impersonate people and their loved ones, and the many surprising risks that come with using open wi-fi networks and Bluetooth settings.
As well as providing an in-depth look into phone hacking and the vulnerability of private data, Phone Hacking also looks at solutions to the problem, raising awareness of the dangers being faced and offering ways of staying protected. In one of the documentary’s most informative sections, software engineer Alexis Delgado explains how his company Squealock Systems has developed messenger apps and VPNs designed to protect user data, offering a safer alternative to large social media platforms.
Many people will be unaware of how their digital devices leave them vulnerable and open to losing their privacy and information. I was hacked twice and I have friends who have been scammed online. These events and the fact of living in an amazing technology-driven State inspired me to look for answers and more pieces of information. The lack of understanding of how powerful our mobile devices are make us very vulnerable to different hacking and scamming scenarios. My wish is that this film can be an eye-opener to prevent going through the horrible feeling of being hacked or scammed.
