Director Statement

Mr. Mimoto is a stylised comedy designed to make you think about what can often be a rather difficult topic to discuss: racism.

The film is based around the simple question: Is he Mr. Mimoto? Many judgements fall into place and there's a lot of discussion to be had on the nature of this question. We designed every element of the film - from the production design and use of colours to the score - to be tinged with touches of cultural appropriation and make you question if you are even allowed to laugh at some of what you're experiencing.

Ultimately, we hope the film leads to discussions amongst the audience about the simple question: Is he Mr. Mimoto?

The film itself was made by a diverse cohort - Writer / Director Govind Chandran and Producer Olivia D'lima are both of South Asian descent (the latter being mixed race, as is cast member Noa Nikita Bleeker), with half the crew consisting of students learning their craft and a predominantly female crew.

The film was shot entirely in Headington Hill Hall, previously the residence of infamous publisher Robert Maxwell.
