Director Statement

I met Julie Chan Lin at a film festival in Eugene, Oregon several years ago, while promoting my animated short film "Up in the Clouds."

When she told me about her obsession with Kate Middleton and her Middleton Madness fan page and website, I thought this could make a fun and entertaining documentary short or reality program.

After interviewing her, I discovered that she had obtained her position as a reporter for KVAL News in Eugene, Oregon because of the aforementioned obsession with the Royal family.

As it turned out, several years earlier, Julie tossed a Royal Wedding viewing party in her home in California that attracted the attention of news media in Los Angeles.

At the party, Julie connected with a news videographer who helped her get started in broadcast journalism and eventually land the job at KVAL News in Oregon.

Through Julie and her husband Jeff, I was able to obtain a copy of the TV news video of her Royal Wedding viewing party, as well as photos and video of her attending a Royal fundraiser polo match, in Santa Barbara, California, where she had hoped to meet Kate Middleton and Prince William.

The primary interviews were shot on a Canon DSLR inside Julie's family home in San Marino, California.

I also captured b-roll video using an iPhone 7 Plus while following Julie to one of her daughter's soccer games and the family's trip to pick out a pumpkin for Halloween that same afternoon.

I edited on an iMac with Final Cut Pro X software utilizing a minimalist cutting style in order to allow the story to tell itself through the archival video, photos and interviews.

It is my hope that audiences will find her story fun, inspiring and entertaining.
