Director Statement

We only have one shot at life, so why waste a moment? Through Mausoleum, I want to capture the dying embers of a long forgotten love. Sometimes even love can’t conquer the ennui, security and comfort of modern living.

In an age of overstimulated connectivity and communication, how is it that so often, people still fail to communicate and therefore jeopardise the greatest gift of human life: love? I want to tell a story that takes a macro insight into this issue through the despondent and aging union of Julia and Neil. They are a couple who have forgotten what it was to love each other and have never had the courage to discuss and overcome the many trappings of a decades old marriage.

Through the use of soliloquy combined with dolly camerawork, we want to create a deceptively simple film with a gravitas that will lend itself as a warning to younger and older generations alike. If we bottle up our emotions, then only we are guilty for the loss of our best years.

Life is permeant and so is film. There is both beauty and panic in its inconsistency and fluidity, which is something that is better to appreciate than resist. By filling this short with a gut wrenching performance from our leading actress combined with the work of a faithful and innovative crew, I know that we can make a truly unique film with a real voice.
