Director Biography - Jimsha .

A fan of animation, comic books, and other forms of popular culture, Jimsha became enmeshed in the convention ("con") scene through cosplay photography (taking pictures of con attendees dressed in costumes representing characters from various fandoms). Awed and inspired by the passion and talent of fellow enthusiasts, Jimsha searched for a way to both celebrate and promote this niche subculture.

Having previously received a degree in Screenwriting from Loyola Marymount University, Jimsha crafted "Looking for Miku", the tale of a geek who helps her crush hunt for a cosplayer at an anime (Japanese animation) con. After the screenplay was nominated for Best Comedy Script at Action on Film International Film Festival, Jimsha was encouraged to bring the story to life despite having no prior film production experience.

Before directing "Looking for Miku", Jimsha wrote several feature-length and episodic TV spec scripts; one spec was optioned and others have either won or placed in competition.

Director Statement

"Looking for Miku" is my love letter to anime, cons/con culture, cosplay, and general nerdery. From the opening and closing sequences to the sponsor cards and commercial bumpers—and even the running time—the film was designed to play like an anime episode. On average, it contains one trope from, one homage to, or one outright theft from some American or Japanese pop culture franchise every 24 seconds. Some of these references were manually inserted frame by frame, requiring months of tedious effort. This truly was a labor of love!

As my first film, "Looking for Miku" was an incredible learning experience that gave me the opportunity to work with some wonderful and talented artists. It also allowed me to showcase a few of my amazing con friends; to use the skills I gained from cosplay photography; and to push the boundaries of my personal limitations. Even if it's a bit rough around the edges, it's my sincere hope that "Looking for Miku" will bring you a small taste of the magical world of cons—and maybe encourage you to look for your own inner geek, too!
