Director Statement

"Last Words: Katherine" is the first in a trilogy of stories about how love may survive death. In this film an elderly man grieves for his spouse of many years. In his grief, he begins to experience her presence. She has returned to help him through the first, worst wave of grief.

The film demanded a concise, simple yet poetic style. The cinematic goal was a very natural rendering. The appearance of the dead wife is not a sensational special effect even when she appears to her husband from a different time. She is simply there or not there. The world of grief is still at times and frustrating at other times.

Many scenes were described in the script but were improvised by our actors to fill them out.
