Kaanchli... Life in a Slough

Kishnu gets married to an immensely beautiful woman Kajri. One day Thakur (the village Head) sees Kajri and gets mesmerised by her beauty. He can barely control his lustful intentions towards Kajri and orders his special accomplice Bhoja to get her by hook or by crook .
Kajri is a very loving wife and extremely loyal towards her husband. One day in the absence of her husband Kishnu, Thakur sees an opportunity to visit the house to fulfil his evil desires but Kajri attacks Thakur and manages to save herself from his clutches.
When Kishnu comes back, instead of praising Kajri, Kishnu warns her not to misbehave with Thakur ever again. This was very shockingly heartbreaking for Kajri as she had never imagined that her husband would turn out to be a coward and leave her alone to fight with the world. Sad and disheartened, Kajri tried to convince herself thinking that may be if her husband sees her with any other man in a compromising condition, he might then react positively and show his manliness and valour to protect her.
As luck would have it, Bhoja uncontrollably falls in love with Kajri and this gave Kajri an idea to test her husband by using Bhoja as bait.
How did Kajri test her husband? What was the outcome? Does a woman really need a man to survive or can she live without being dependent on anyone?
This film is a story that questions the true meaning of marriage in a male dominated society and if a woman is not happy in a relationship, seeks to address her right to live independently with dignity & pride.

Director Statement

I always wondered and had the ever-lingering thought running in my mind that when God Almighty created this entire universe, he probably had no prejudice between a man and a woman. He had imparted diverse yet individual powers to both considering them as equal. What is outrageous to witness is why then the world sees a woman lesser to any men and have predominantly accepted the fact that women are not equal to men.
In a country like “India” the contradiction is far from acceptable norms. A man worships a female by raising her stature on a pedestal of a Goddess but he doesn't wish to render any consideration of equality while viewing them as either a mother, sister, wife, daughter or even as a friend.
When I read “Kaanchli” a folk tale written by renowned writer “Vijaydan Detha”, it aptly echoed the pain of a woman facing this disturbing social evil, that has been deep rooted in our society for centuries. It prompted me to think as to why even after depicting such strong stories, the condition of women hasn't even marginally improved in our society? Or is there something missing that could bring about a change in the vision that sees a man and a woman as equal?
This beautiful story by an immensely talented writer, profoundly inspired me to raise the awareness and spread the message to the entire world through the folk tale in a contemporary manner. With humble gratitude, I present a heart touching film - “Kaanchli. Life in a slough"
