Here begins

Romain Claris was born in Cannes in 1983.
After a trip to Niger in 1995 where he attended the shooting of the feature film Imûhar in the middle of the Sahara, he worked for several years in black and white and color photography. He bought his first camera by selling his collections of poems at the Bordeaux train station. He then began directing very short films in 2000 with "Infini" directed in Spain and "Real Trip" directed in New York in 2001. He worked as a cameraman on "Lisbon Project" by Irish artist James Coleman, produced by Les Films d'Ici in 2004

Graduated with honours from the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français in 2005, he then joined the communication and advertising agency Claris Image Builder in Bordeaux as head of the video department and is responsible for the production of around 250 films for the luxury industry: yachting, vineyards, architecture, food.

In addition to his agency work, he continues to make personal films, short and medium-length films, selected or awarded at international film festivals.
His two minute films Life Choice and Le temps mange la voix et les mots were selected by the cultural program of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to be part of the French selection for the World One Minute.
His poem film Painting with the dragonfly written and directed in the USA was selected by the Cinérail Festival in Paris in 2009. In 2011, the short film La robe was awarded Best Experimental Film at the Disturb Awards in Paris.
He has also directed several documentaries on designers: Bernard Varvat, sculptor on marble, Gilles Jonemann, jewel and object designer, Tomas Bagackas, fashion designer. In 2011, the artistic director Alexandre Hoffmann commissioned him to produce a 45-minute documentary carte blanche on the life of the international dance troupe United Dance Company.
In 2018, the one-minute film shot with a mobile phone Les cousins des nuages was selected by some fifty international festivals and won five prizes, including the Award for the best philosophy in animation at the Avalonia Festival in the USA.
In 2018, he co-directed the medium-length film Voici que la nuit, a very free adaptation on Yasunari Kawabata's novel "Les belles endormies", selected at the Forum Experimental in Los Angeles and in Belgium at the Verbeke Foundation at the Wunderground Film Festival and received the Award for the best experimental medium-length film at the Five Continent International Film Festival.
In 2019 he participated by directing the very short film Ici commence for "Un trésor à la carte" initiated by the Watever NGO: a private auction at the Lafayette Anticipation Foundation in Paris, the profits of which were donated to the sea rescue actors. The film is then selected in Madrid by the EuropeNow festival and in Bilbao at the Bideodromo International Experimental Film Festival.

He also signed several photography and video exhibitions with the photographer Nicolas Claris, including Bangladesh in 2013, Trois châteaux en hiver in 2014, Bateaux, Châteaux, Gâteaux in 2016, Rouge in 2017, Noirs in 2018. Their latest exhibition Un peu de rouge, pourtant. is currently on display at the Seeko'o cultural centre in Bordeaux until early January 2020.

Under development, "Les comptes de la lune" a short film project that proposes another story on the invention of numbers and calculation that takes place between -20,000 and -12,000 years. A creative documentary to be co-directed with Jacques Dubuisson.

Il achète sa première caméra en vendant ses recueils de poèmes à la gare de Bordeaux et commence la réalisation de très courts-métrages en 2000 avec «Infini» écrit et tourné en Espagne et «Real Trip» réalisé à New York en 2001. Il travaille comme cameraman sur « Lisbon Project » de l’artiste irlandais James Coleman, produit par Les Films d’Ici en 2004.

Diplômé avec mention du Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français en 2005 il intègre ensuite à Bordeaux l’agence de communication et de publicité Claris image builder en tant que responsable du département vidéo et assure la production et la réalisation d'environ 250 films pour l’industrie du luxe : nautisme, vignobles, architecture, culinaire.

Parallèlement à son travail en agence, il continue de réaliser des films personnels, courts et moyens-métrages, sélectionnés ou récompensés lors de nombreux festivals de films internationaux.
Ses deux films Life Choice et Le temps mange la voix et les mots sont sélectionnés par le programme culturel des Jeux Olympiques de Pékin en 2008 pour faire partie de la sélection française au World One Minute.
Son film poème Painting with the dragonfly écrit et réalisé aux USA est sélectionné par le Festival Cinérail à Paris en 2009. En 2011 le court-métrage La robe est primé Meilleur film expérimental aux Disturb Awards à Paris.
Il réalise également plusieurs documentaires sur des créateurs : Bernard Varvat, sculpteur sur marbre, Gilles Jonemann, créateur de bijoux et d’objets, Tomas Bagackas, créateur de mode. En 2011 le directeur artistique Alexandre Hoffmann lui confie une carte blanche : la réalisation d’un documentaire de 45 minutes sur la vie de la troupe internationale de danse United Dance Company.
En 2018, le film d’une minute tourné avec un téléphone portable Les cousins des nuages est sélectionné par une cinquantaine de festivals internationaux et remporte cinq prix dont le Prix de la meilleure philosophie en animation au Festival Avalonia aux USA.
Il co-réalise en 2018 le moyen-métrage Voici que la nuit, une très libre adaptation du roman de Yasunari Kawabata « Les belles endormies », sélectionné au Forum Experimental de Los Angeles ainsi qu'en Belgique à la Verbeke Foundation au Wunderground Film Festival et reçoit le Prix du meilleur moyen-métrage expérimental du Five Continent International Film Festival.
En 2019 il participe en réalisant le très court-métrage Ici commence à «Un trésor à la carte» initié par l’association Watever : une vente privée, aux enchères, à la Fondation Lafayette Anticipation dont les bénéfices ont été reversés aux acteurs du sauvetage en mer. Le film est ensuite sélectionné à Madrid par le festival EuropeNow et à Bilbao au Bideodromo International Expérimental Film Festival.

Il signe également avec le photographe Nicolas Claris plusieurs expositions de photographie et vidéo dont Bangladesh en 2013, Trois châteaux en hiver en 2014, Bateaux, Châteaux, Gâteaux en 2016, Rouge en 2017, Noirs en 2018. Leur dernière exposition Un peu de rouge, pourtant. est actuellement présentée au sein de l’espace culturel du Seeko’o à Bordeaux jusque début janvier 2020.

En cours de développement, "Les comptes de lune" un projet de court-métrage qui propose une autre histoire de l’invention des chiffres et du calcul qui se déroule entre -20 000 et -12 000 ans. Un documentaire de création qui sera co-réalisé avec Jacques Dubuisson.
