Aiko Lozar is a junior at Chapman University majoring in Film Production with an emphasis in Directing, and minoring in Culture of the Classical World.
While in high school, she wrote and directed Love is Blind: A Spoken-Word Play to sold-out audiences. Love is Blind went on to be professionally produced by the Playwrights Project in San Diego, CA and published with Concord Theatricals. She directed short films in high school which got into over 20 film festivals, such as the iVIE Awards and the All American High School Film Festival. Aiko won the Best in Fest award at the SOCAPA Tap Into Film Slam two years in a row.
In college, she worked as a Video Production Intern at Sound United and Development Intern at Hopetown Entertainment, and she was a part of Casting Society Cares' Casting Assistant Training and Education Program. Aiko also worked as a Writer/Director for over a year at Sparkhouse Productions. At Sparkhouse, she has written and directed over 25 commercials for brands such as Pura Vida and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Though she had to stop working in Summer 2023 due to being diagnosed with neuroendocrine cancer, she is happy to be returning to Chapman University in Spring 2024 cancer-free.
Heart Candies Taste Like Chalk is Aiko Lozar's first project developed in university. As a mixed-race Filipina-American filmmaker, she aspires to be a director who places an emphasis on culturally significant stories.
When I heard this true story told to me by one of our crew members, it resonated deeply with me because of my own experiences with my bisexuality. I wanted to create a film that unapologetically depicted the harsh truths of homophobia and highlighted how it can deeply emotionally affect today's youth. I am grateful to work with such a passionate team of people who believed in the Heart Candies message. I hope this film can inspire people to reach out to LGBTQ+ youth and show support for their relationships.
