I'm Matthew Simpson, an English actor and commercial director. Known for acting in Masters of the Air, Bansu, Annihilation, & Eastenders, and directing over 30 commercials.
I've got a deep love for indie cinema and telling stories in unconventional ways. I'm all about pushing boundaries and doing things differently.
I come from the cozy coastal town of Lowestoft, England. I made my way to London for drama school and fell in love with acting even more.
After graduating in 2010, I acted in a few indie films and later transitioned to directing, working on commercials for top brands. My years of being on both sides of the camera has given me a ton of filmmaking knowledge.
Having a deep passion for filmmaking and fascination with its limitless possibilities has led me to create DISREMEMBER, the first-ever feature-length film made entirely by one person.
Get ready, because you won’t Disremember ‘DISREMEMBER’!
This film was ENTIRELY created by myself. From script to screen, I handled every aspect of this film. As far as I know, it's the first-ever one-person narrative feature-length film. It's a self-funded, big idea film that I feel truly embodies independent filmmaking and innovation. Over the past 6 years, while juggling work, I poured everything into creating 'DISREMEMBER.’ It hasn’t been easy and it's no glossy Hollywood tale. It's raw, it's real, and it's been quite the journey.
'DISREMEMBER' is a psychological thriller that's as suspenseful to watch as it was challenging to make. You might be wondering why I took on this crazy task all by myself. Well, simply put, I love films, a big challenge, and doing things differently. While filmmaking is typically collaborative, not everyone gets that chance. So, I also wanted to show it's possible to do it alone, with little resources and money, and hope it inspires others to push their creative boundaries. Additionally having been apart of several unfinished projects, this was my way of seeing one through to completion, even if it seemed near impossible.
Every stage of production presented a challenge. Writing the script took me years, potentially due to my lack of experience, but also the intricacies of creating an engaging one-person film. Filming was gruelling, taking 19 days and nights, averaging 5 pages a day, and leaving no time for sleep. I storyboarded everything in 3D to ease filming and ensure each shot was as dynamically interesting and relevant to the story as possible. This included subjective POV and snorricam shots, putting the camera inside things and hanging it off things. Post-production took a year and at times felt like going back to school, especially in the sound department. Despite all the relentless challenges, here I am, battle-scarred but extremely proud, and ready to share 'DISREMEMBER' and all it's crazy stories.
The creatives I talk to about 'DISREMEMBER' are as eager to see it as they are intrigued by the unconventional way it was made. I believe 'DISREMEMBER' organically appeals to a broad audience.
For the love of film,
Matthew Simpson
