In any love story, we see love, understanding, emotions, feelings, and ultimately happy endings or simple solutions to tragic events between men and women. But writer and poet Biswajit Chowdhury's story “Confession of a Murder” seems to me to be a story of metaphoric feeling. As we know, Shefali or Shiuli are two names of the same flower, popular in Bangladesh and West Bengal (The scientific name of this Nyctanthes arbor-tristis is commonly known as 'night-flowering jasmine' and 'coral jasmine' in English.) Shahjahan's expression of love for his lover Shefali in this story was as mesmerizing as the fragrance of Shefali or Shiuli flowers. Shefali also loved Shahjahan and she wanted to run away with Shahjahan without accepting society. But Shahjahan, who was drowning in poverty, could not accept the invitation of his lover Shefali. As a result, he lost Shefali. While Shahjahan was reeling from the pain of losing Shefali, the news of Shefali's suicide as a victim of dowry made Shahjahan even more painful. As a result, not being able to accept Shefali instills guilt in Shahjahan and he thinks that Shefali died because of him. And now in another cruel irony of fate, the responsibility of killing an unknown girl fell on the shoulders of Shahjahan. whose name is Shiuli. It can also happen by coincidence. Shahjahan does not know who killed Shiuli but the name Shiuli was known to Shahjahan so during police interrogation Shahjahan uses the metaphor of atonement and uses the name Shiuli to get rid of the physical and mental suffering. Using the name Shefali instead of Shiuli as a metaphor, he confesses to having killed Shefali. Actually, he didn't kill anyone. But as neither the police nor the magistrate knew about Shefali, everyone was confused. Everyone's question is, the name of the deceased is Shiuli, but why is Shahjahan saying Shefali's name repeatedly? Shahjahan then said Shiuli and Shefali are the same flower names. By saying 'flower' here, Shahjahan refers to his love metaphorically and refers to his lover Shefali. In this allegorical story, Shiuli and Shefali are two different characters, but both are named after the same flower and through this name, Shahjahan expresses his love for Shefali, which transcends conventional mundane simplicity and appeals to the reader's and viewer's sensibilities.
