Director Statement

When I moved to Los Angeles in 2016, I did so via roadtrip with my little brother, Elliot. We stopped in Las Vegas as we passed through The Mojave Desert. I was 26 and had never experienced such a stark emotional and visual contrast as Clark County, NV. You drive for hours, surveying nothing but isolation — before being swallowed by the city’s intensity. What I found so compelling (and still do) about Las Vegas: her ability to feel just as isolating as the desert which surrounds her, even when one is enveloped with casino lights and authentic laughter — there remains a feeling of seclusion.

Producing a bilingual film with Analia Lessenberry Valdez has been a dream of mine since watching her perform in Detroit's indie theatre scene. I wanted to marry the aforementioned feelings above with a loose narrative; one which tackled something more deep-seated than the typically experienced Las Vegas story. I’m so grateful for Valdez trusting me with the inner-world she expresses (in her own words) through “Conexión”. I found her spoken-word piece “Fuego, Tierra, Aire, y Agua" (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) to be spellbinding; articulating themes of conflicted racial identity, spiritual unrest, and a forthright longing to be understood. I knew her stream-of-consciousness writing was destined to unify with the concept behind my next spiritual-sci-fi film — that is how “Conexión” came to be.

I found the vast terrain which our heroine "Mija" explored was best featured via multiple formats: Digital Film, Super8 Celluloid, & 360 Immersive.
Shot over the course of 3 days in Clark County, NV; our film is dedicated to all those who find clarity in solitude — who may sometimes feel as though they (too) are from The Great Out There…
