Director Biography - Mikis Fernandez

Since I was a teenager, I read books, comics, listened to music, watched movies. I didn't know how to express my feelings, my vision of the world, and it was through the stories I scribbled that I felt I could express them. It went from being a hobby to a career when I decided to stop my scientific studies to enroll at the film university. For me it was the most natural medium to express my ideas. I started with short films, then a self-produced feature film: Living In Extasy. It had no success in festivals in France, but had a rather good international career with several selections in the USA and Canada: Toronto, Atlanta, Hawaii and New Jersey. Are my stories more suitable for an American audience? Maybe! I have continued to write personal projects and episodes for television series, three of which were produced and broadcast. I trained with John Truby and Scott Myers and wrote a series project: Classified: The Time Traveler which won an award for pilot funding at the Serie Series Festival of Fontainebleau (France). I shot it this summer and it's currently in post-production. I'm enclosing the script.
Today the desire is always stronger because through my stories, I want to have an impact on the world. While dealing with strong human and social themes (father-son relationships, family, racism,...), I also want to bring a background of personal development, inspiration, because I want my projects like films that have changed my life in the past (Rocky, Once Upon A Time In America, Interstellar, Remenber The Titans and so many more) to change the life, in a positive way, of those who see them.

Season 1 : The Time Traveler

CONCEPT
Classified is a fantastic series of serials. Like series such as American Horror Story or True Detective, each season has its own plot and each season is independent. They all take place in the same universe with, as a link between them, the presence of two recurring characters: the journalists investigating the closed files. If the first season takes place in the USA, the others will take place in France or in other countries.
The editorial line of Classified is to deal with strange or so-called supernatural phenomena, modern urban legends from a particular angle that would offer a new perspective on the world. By appealing to the imagination of the spectators, they offer a glimpse into our world today.
In its form, Classified, is a mockumentary, mixture of documentary and found footage (videos filmed by the protagonists of the story). The point of view is that of the journalists. They carry out an in-depth investigation to untangle the true from the false in the manner of a fantastic thriller.

IMPORTANT NOTES

Why the mockumentaryy genre?
CLASSIFIED takes the shape of a fictional documentary with Found Footage. Tackling this fiction - qui ne sit pas sous nom - by shaping it with “sensational” reports that we can see on the web in order to captivate the audience. This mise en scene should lead them to question the truth on what we present them as authentic and secretive, two adjectives immediately stimulating curiosity. Should they trust whatever they see on the internet? Is it a trustworthy source? What is the goal of those who post conspiracy theories documents or who rewrite History?
Like a documentary, CLASSIFIED utilises various visual sources : witness statements, archive, re-enactment with actors, as well as a voice over explaining the investigation led by journalists. Nevertheless constructed in a narrative form, CLASSIFIED : the Time Traveler is a Fantastic Thriller.

First season. Point of vue of The Time Traveler
In movies and on TV, time traveling has often been tackled from the Time Traveler’s point of view. In this series, it’s the exterior point of view that is important and that the audience questions. And if we were to meet the Time Traveler, what would we do? Tempted to convince him to let us travel with him, of course! What are the risks, and what is his goal? If he can change History, he can undoubtedly have an influence on ours and “erase” us from History without impunity. And if we could go back in time, would we change the past? Whether it’s History or personal history, what would be the consequences? Should we change our past to become a better person or accept it and take advantage of it? The dual that will take place between the 2 characters will attempt to bring an answer to all these questions, all the while treating the scientific, philosophical, emotional and human aspects of time traveling.

THE STORY INSIDE THE STORY
For years, i have tryed to make story about time traveling. The main subject of The Time Traverler is : what would you do if you met a Time Traveler ? O course, you want to travel with him ! But, what or ? Tourism is ok, but it will be never enough.

You have the power to change History. We all have reason to change it. There are two «Histories» : the big one with a big H, and the «small» on, our personnal history. We all have pains, injuries coming from our childhood. The question is : which one would you change ? Maybe both ?
The theory of The Time Traveler (it’s a scientific théory) : if you change the big History (Exemple : you kill Hitler in 1936) you will create a new timeline and you can never go back to your own timeline. So you seved millions of lives, but only in a new timeline.
If you change the «small» history, you do not create a new timeline. What will be your new you with no pains or injuries. Would you be a better ? All your past, pains, failures, victories, injuries, joy lead to who you are today. Bruce Byrne will face the possibility to change his past, but do he really have to do that ? That is the mean question of this project : do you have to fix your past or do you have to accept your past to grow ? Maybe you just have to accept who you are and become a better man/woman with all you get, your forces and weaknesses.
