Writer Statement

CAPTIVE was originally conceived as a short story (I was living in Edinburgh at the time and in the shower when the idea came to me). I turned it into a short play which got an airing at Sydney's Script-In-Hand play development workshop in March 2014, and then I sort of forgot about it until, in January 2017, it was broadcast as a short play on ‘Radio Playhouse’, Triple H radio, Sydney, Australia.

Now, I normally write dark or romantic comedy and it wasn't until I got some feedback on a script from a PAGE Awards judge that said something like "This writer is wasted writing comedy, I'd like to see this writer tackle an action story." Which got me thinking about whether I could turn CAPTIVE into a full-length screenplay. The answer was 'yes', of course. And now CAPTIVE has garnered two 'Recommends' from coverage and won two screenwriting contests.

CAPTIVE is also now a full-length stage play, available from Playscripts Online: https://playscripts.online/shop/captive.
