Calico Pie

In the 1970s, the women’s equal right amendment was proposed and failed to pass.

In the 1970’s a married woman seeking employment might be asked if it was okay with her husband if she worked. A woman with children might be told company policy did not allow her employment.

Calico Pie is the story of a woman who balked against the norms of that time. She did not go to college to meet the right man who would support her and their children. and whom she could support by being the stay at home wife behind the successful man

Her mother basically disowned her. She ended up losing losing custody of the younger her two daughters and disappeared only to show up into their lives years later.

In Calico Pie, We never actually meet this woman. Because we find her in each one of us

We get to know her through the world that judges her.
Her mother who never forgives,
Her daughter Summer who doesn’t understand,
Summer’s boss, who admires her rebellious spirt,
CeeCee, the bi-racial daughter she lost who judges and rejects her.
The woman who adopted CeeCee who understand and accepts.

Calico Pie has had three table reads. Even though in a recent presentation I introduced it as the penultimate chick flick, several men commented that the issues are still relevant. And all the women identified with it.

Calico Pie is a character driven drama with music.
Low budget. Few locations and can be set anywhere in the US.
Most of the scenes take place in a Boutique Restaurant called Lou’s for lunch. There is also a pivotal scene that takes place in a park.

In Calico Pie is about family, friendship, joy and heartbreak.
The story is Powerful and universal to our times.
