Experiencing Interruptions?

Beyond the Green Wave

Amid a battle for exceptions to a total abortion ban, Dominican afro-feminists emphasize the need for a cultural decriminalization of abortion, comprehensive sex education, and the inclusion of rural communities in collective efforts towards reproductive access.

This documentary—through interviews with activists, afro-feminists, medical professionals, social researchers and politicians— explores the state of reproductive rights for women in DR, how lack of access to sex education systemically oppresses women and birth-givers, how mainstream feminism excludes women in rural areas, and the cultural climate that threatens women’s safety and bodily autonomy.

Director Biography

Natalia Perez-Gonzalez (she/her) is an Afro-Latina journalist, producer, and freelance writer, specializing in stories on identity, women’s health and wellness, and Latino communities.

Currently, she’s a Pulitzer Center Reporting Fellow, and a freelancer for Cosmopolitan, Bustle, Elite Daily, and POPSUGAR. Formerly, she was a Newhouse Foundation Scholar, and recently graduated with her master’s in magazine journalism at Newhouse School of Public Communications.

During her undergraduate career at Southern Adventist University (Collegedale, Tenessee) she worked as a lead reporter, lifestyle editor, managing editor and Editor-in-Chief for her campus newspaper, the Southern Accent. Throughout her EIC tenure, she strived to highlight diversity on her campus, rebrand the paper, and inspire discussions on race and equality. Her initiatives—including a Latinx/Hispanic themed issue, a #MeToo issue, a Race Relations issue and a modern redesign of the paper—led the Accent to win awards in feature and news writing from the Society of Adventist Communicators.

During her free time, you can likely find her searching for the best pupuserias in D.C. (and the best Puerto Rican + Dominican eats in Syracuse), making almost anyone she ever speaks to take the enneagram test (and then spending the next 2 hours chatting about what your test results mean), watching home renovation videos on Tiktok, or other majestical forms of introverting.
