BELONGING
Belonging is a multi-year program which explores our vulnerable mountain home and the people who tend it, love it and depend on it. During Year One, Artist-in-Residence Ruth Chase led us on a journey through which we examined our sense of belonging in relation to the land. Working with filmmaker Radu Sava, she directed a short film and community exhibition, together with a year's worth of public art making workshops and dialogue.
"BELONGING", the film, was shown at the 18th Annual Nevada City Film Festival (AKA "the Sundance of the Sierra") in September, 2018, then at the 18th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival in January 2019. Belonging is a program of Nevada County Arts Council, supported in part by an Artists in Communities grant from the California Arts Council.
Belonging features Rick Berry, Jeff Brown, Jonathan Collier, Shelly Covert, Philip Oyung, Nancy Tiken Lopez, Elisa Parker, Aimee Retzler, Mike Stewart and Rob Thompson.

An Artist in Residence at Nevada County Arts Council, Ruth is lead artist of one of its flagship programs, "Belonging", thanks in part to a grant from the California Arts Council through its Artists in Communities Program. Ruth is the recipient of a Certificate of Appreciation from the City of Los Angeles for Art in Action, as well as a grant from the Carl Jacobs Foundation for her seminal West of Lincoln project. She has been published in Huffington Post, LA Weekly, Voyage LA, and is a featured artist on The Dead Files for the Travel Channel. She has taught at the Crocker Art Museum, and is a graduate of the San Francisco Art Institute.
My work documents the human spirit and the powerful insights that allow people to find a sense of belonging within their community. The public plays a vital role in the outcome of my work, taking a journey with me that can last up to two years. I produce multi-media installations that include paintings, audio, social media, sideshows, video, and social engagement. Self-aware subjects with strong belief systems fascinate me and draw me in.
