I made a short film about America, and I wish you could hear my voice...
I am an immigrant, who came here at the age of 14. I went through a lot of hardships because I could not speak English, I was a foreigner, and I was Asian. But, I have made it so far with the help from people who believed in me, and I am grateful to this country for who I am now.
At the same time, I am very concerned of and saddened by so many repeated tragedies happening in America that have brought the stream of tears, fear, and anger upon every single one of us. So many lives being taken away, so many innocent people being mistreated, so many disputes dividing us, and I felt motivated and obligated to make this film because the matters discussed in the film affect all of us.
The film deals with two very controversial, but important social issues in America. Yes, it is about a female college student who gets sexually harassed by her professor. And yes, it is about an African-American man who gets confronted by a police officer. As I understand the gravity and sensitivity of the issues, my intent is never to mock or disrespect any culture, any idea, or anyone, but to bring awareness to the issues and portray how America looks like right now.
Through this film, I want to to spread hope and call for unity. As the film demonstrates some of the most controversial phenomena, it brings the sense of sympathy and eagerness to act from people and urges them to understand and recognize the cause and effect of these issues. Furthermore, at the end of the film, what I wish to accomplish is to have people realize this truth: no matter how harsh our lives can turn out to be, we always have our VOICE, and it will be heard in America.
