After The March

In honor of the 2020 centennial of women voting in America, "After The March" explores the 1917 imprisonment and hunger strike of Alice Paul in her fight for suffrage.

Through the eyes of Mary, a Black prison maid, we see Alice isolated and tortured at the hands of a cruel prison physician.

Alice, who had marginalized African American women in her dogged pursuit of suffrage, must reckon with her own hypocrisy or risk losing both her campaign and her life.  Inspired by actual events.

As statues of racist icons fall across the world, this film takes a nuanced look at a feminist hero and her regrettable approach to race in order to win the vote 100 years ago.

As we approach the 2020 American Presidential Election, "After The March" is an extremely timely film about race, feminism, and leadership.

After The March was made in collaboration with Daniel Newman, Joy Donnell, Tiffany Murray and Amy Kersten.

Joy Donnell is a producer, brand strategist and author. Entitled "What If Movie Icons Wore African Fashion?", the campaign raises awareness for pan-African entrepreneurship, cultural understanding and conscious fashion. Tiffany is a Los Angeles-based Camera Assistant (IATSE Local 600), Cinematographer, and Director. She has been working as a union 1st AC and non-union DP and Director. Her directorial debut No Cleaner Threads went on to screen at numerous festivals across the country winning multiple awards along the way. Other recent directing work includes Panasonic-sponsored documentary short, Backbone, and post-apocalyptic short I’ll Be Here.

Amy is an actress, writer, editor and producer, known for In Case of Emergency (2018) (Amazon Prime), Hot Mess (2013) and Gay's Anatomy (2009). She is the in-house video producer for the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. Her work in narrative and documentary film centers on scripted comedy and cause based documentary content. In 2019 Amy founded Much Ado Entertainment with Producer Margaret Bramwell Doyle. Their first feature A Woman Abroad is in development with Kampfire Films and slated for production in China in 2021.

When Executive Producer Daniel Newman discovered that a cleaner had helped Alice Paul smuggle vital messages out of prison, he recognised an opportunity to celebrate the many unacknowledged women of color who have made huge contributions to the suffragist movement. This idea builds on Daniel's previous short film, "X Marks The Spot", which explored xenophobia in modern Britain in the form of metaphorical horror. Continuing to explore the theme of race, Daniel is now producing a bilingual film that explores the strains placed on a long distance interracial relationship between an American woman and Chinese man during the coronavirus lockdown. Director Statement

"After The March" is a bold step for Tiffany, Daniel, and myself toward the kind of intersectional filmmaking we aspire to achieve. Exploring our own privilege and that of a feminist hero was a challenging but necessary step in our filmmaking careers. We humbly celebrate the centennial of the Women's vote in the US in the shadow of purged voter rolls and thousands of suppressed minority voters. We strive to be part of the progress towards a true American Democracy." - Amy Kersten
