Director Biography - Arthur Gay

Having spent his early years of life, often moving countries with his mother, Arthurs work focuses on ideas of existentialism and belonging. Within his fiction work, his characters are often in a state of transience, grappling with the meaning of what 'home' means to them and what the future holds. He is interested in characters that are naturally on the fringe of societal norms, granting a different lens on the world.

After eventually settling back in tāmaki makaurau, New Zealand. In 2009, Arthur went on to study film at Unitec, graduating with a Bachelor in Performing and Screen Arts, majoring in Directing and Writing for Screen. His first significant work was a feature experimental/art documentary titled 'Malerverksted' focusing on the works and process of three fine artists creating work in a remote town in Norway. The film screened as an installation as part of the Auckland Arts Festival in 2014. After this, he spent 5 years crewing within the New Zealand film industry gaining valuable skills in various departments, while making his own work on the side. For him, the pursuit of his own work was always the most important endeavour as he would often take time off between paid jobs to focus on his own short films, music videos and a feature documentary in post production titled 'Somewhere in Between'. In 2020 he was accepted into both the prestigious NYU Tisch and the Columbia University Graduate film programs with scholarship offers from both schools. He ended up at Columbia University, where he is currently completing his MFA graduate program and was recently awarded the celebrated 'Miloš Forman Directing Fellowship' from the program.

Director Statement

First and foremost this is a story about the way in which two characters share affinity in a common trauma and how each one processes it. I am particularly interested in stories of belonging and how ones identity is formed by this. In 'A Shared Moment of Loneliness' I wanted to explore voyeuristic projection of identity upon someone else. There is, in a sense a detachment from the self in this film; a detachment that ultimately allows Emily to more objectively see herself. I wanted to explore the duality between these characters through the formal mechanics of the cinematography. Gaining direct access to our protagonist is a struggle and, during the period where she exposes herself the most, we are only granted part of the story - through image and not sound. I wanted the audience to focus on the connection between these characters rather than the single journey of one. In a sense, to create a greater understanding of the individual stories, through the shared experience.

Having spent many a time in random motels in strange places, I found myself captivated by the particular transient and ephemeral feeling that they generated. I wanted to explore the way in which space and environment influence character and their internal state. For me, there is a dialogue between the more 'objective' formal language and the way in which this can be used to explore characters subjective interior.

Most of all, this is a story about the messiness of life's largest decisions. They are never clean, never concluded with a neat bow. They can be liberating while forever remaining a scar on our bodies.
