Director Biography - Gelsomina De Lucia

Weekly, Gelsomina would visit her local blockbusters with her mother. Over the years, Gelsomina has gained knowledge from her grandfather that he would attend his local cinema weekly when Gelsomina's mother was a child to keep her and himself entertained. Evidently, this family passion for film has been passed down for generations and is the reason Gelsomina became a filmmaker.

However, her interest for the horror genre began once Gelsomina became a teenager. Her mother would allow Gelsomina to join her when watching the films she rented from Blockbusters. Those films were horror films.

At the age of 17, her A Level short horror film 'DORMANT' was nominated for the BFI Award by the MediaMag Production.

Gelsomina went on to study a Film and Television BA which was then followed by a Media and Communication MA at Brunel University. During these courses, she wrote her dissertations about ; 'Applying psychoanalysis to the multiple representations of Mrs Bates throughout the Psycho franchise' and 'The Importance of Active Audiences within the Online Horror Community.'

Since graduating from her undergraduate course in 2018, she co-wrote, produced and directed ALEX - a horror short film - with a budget of £50. The film was positively received amongst the online horror community of Instagram.

She is currently in the process of writing her second horror short film.

Director Statement

I have always been passionate about utilising horror to emphasise certain human behaviours/actions which can be deemed as horrific if shown through a specific light. My inspiration for ALEX was to showcase how the real horror during apocalyptic times is not only the threat outside but between ourselves and those we love. My aim was to explore this by having two characters deal with their new harsh reality differently which - ultimately - rips them apart and leads to an horrific outcome. Fundamentally, the films concept burrows from the idea of ‘say it before it’s too late’ and how if things are left unsaid, how horrific and unbearable of an emotional burden that is.
