Director Statement

‘4EVR’ is the distillation of a feature film's worth of story and depth into a short. We set out to produce an atmospheric piece that explores how grief and guilt can destroy a fragile psyche. My producing partner and writer Joe Fordham and I drew influences from such masterpieces of film like Polanski's ‘Repulsion’ and Aronofsky's ‘Black Swan’.

The old adage of “a film is re-made in the edit” certainly applies here and more. As we inched toward final cut, the film took on new life with surgical cuts and changes. Stylistically, we found the strong color sources in director of photography Chris Saul's lighting design were screaming Giallo at us. This drove us to push the film into bolder and more stylistic extremes to great effect.

The final piece of the production puzzle was the addition of Grammy-nominated & British Academy award-winning composer Austin Wintory who expertly balanced the film's hyper-tactile sound design with a score that conjures flavors of Morricone's early work in Italian Giallo and the final bombastic cue which I feel is a love letter to Bernard Herrmann.

What we've arrived at in the final product is a clockwork music box of a puzzle that we hope will challenge the viewer into active viewing while having some fun along the way.
