Director Joseph Skorman’s concept for the video began, appropriately, with the wave form of the song itself. Flowing from the idea of a lonely voice reverberating inside, multiple images of Chrysta Bell echo and multiply throughout an infinite psychic space, and things get more and more crowded. The high-contrast, hyperstylized black-and-white, the power suits and minimalist dance movements recall ’80s touchstones like Robert Palmer videos and Patrick Nagel paintings. The hallucinogenic climax (note the photo-sensitive epilepsy warning) follows Skorman’s fascination with optical illusions and the iconic Lance Wyman poster for the 1968 Mexico Olympics. “Psychedelic but with a hard ’80s edge—way ahead of its time,” he says. “Everything I attempt in art, I hope to make it half as good as that poster.”
